    Description

Between 1941 and 1943, René Lalique designed several large bowls "Coupes" with the decoration located on a flat rim. This was a departure from his traditional tableware as there had so far been few flat rims. He also experimented with Octogonal (eight-sided) layouts.
"Chantilly" has both these features. It is an eight-sided large (11 1/2" across) bowl, obviously made for desserts and perfect to serve creams or stewed fruit. Another fairly similar bowl from the same period is "Marly".
The motif is in frosted glass against the clear rim and it consists of elaborate chevrons, arranged almost as herringbones but wide enough to be sculpted. (photos 7 and 8).
"Chantilly" is photographed and described (photo 11) in Felix Marcilhac's large book (the unofficial Lalique "Bible"), on page 312 of the 2010 French printing under reference 10-405. The caption clarifies that the bowl was continued after Lalique's death in 1945 (until 1960 more or less), but these particular two bowls are pre-1945: They are signed "R LALIQUE" (photos 9 and 10), a signature only used in his lifetime.
The condition is overall very good, with a few light usage scratches under the bases. One bowl has two minute nicks inside, at the juncture with the flat rim. They are un-noticeable but can be felt under one's nails. The price has been discounted to account for this.
