    Description

René Lalique started to design boxes around 1909. He had just met François Coty, a wealthy entrepreneur who  was the epoch's largest French parfumeur and had just asked him design a line of bottles for his perfumes. Lalique created more than 25 for him over 19 years.  Lalique, until then, had mostly designed jewelry, which he sold himself through his "Maison Lalique company. The idea for the boxes may be have been from Lalique, as he designed, between 1909 and 1912 over 30 models of boxes, all to be sold under his name, and only 3 for Coty products. This was also the period when he started developing bottles for parfumeur clients, Coty being his mentor and financier. This box "L'Origan" (Oregano or Marjolaine) dates from 1912.
It is round, 9 cm in diametre (3 1/2") and about 7 cm high (2 3/4"). The motif represents two women dressed in ample veils and dancing over a flower which can also be a fire with volutes of smoke. One cannot be sure.
    "L'
Origan" is photographed and described (photo 9) in Felix Marcilhac's large book (the unofficial Lalique "Bible"), on page 968 of the 2010 French printing under reference "Coty-3". There is a double signature on the base, "COTY FRANCE" with Coty's hand-written signature, and , around the base " LALIQUE DEPOSÉ",
The condition is very good: The patina has held remarkably well for a box which is over 100 or even 110 years old. Coty himself sold his business in 1928 to an American group who kept the fragrances but none of the bottles or boxes. The box therefore dates from the 1920's at the latest. There is a minuscule chip on the rim of the box, impossible to photograph and invisible unless one looks for it. This box is in an exceptionally good condition and presents excellently.
