    Description

You will receive exact basket in pictures.  8" tall X 7" wide.  The woman who made this basket is Nomusa Dlamini. Beer basket, when filled with fluid, the pores swell to make it waterproof, whilst the outside sweat, keeping the liquid cool.
The design is a mix of feminine (diamonds) & masculine (triangles). The double diamond is a married woman, and the double triangle a married man.
The "marriage" design is a special basket woven by the bride (or a member of her family) as a gift to the groom. It will be used at the wedding as a beer-drinking vessel
Zululand (yes that is the large area of South Africa where the Zulu live) is a remote area in the far North East part of South Africa that borders with Mozambique and the Indian Ocean.  Few tourists make it to this area.  World class Scuba diving is the main attraction (I had the pleasure of working as a Scuba Instructor there).  Back to the "remote",  shipping (from Africa) is a main concern with these baskets.  Large and bulky space is a major cost issue, will not fit in most airline baggage.
I consider African baskets an excellent decor value.  A statement to women's art,  women who live in a harsh
environment.  Universal art that will grace any home regardless of ethnic background.  A dying art as this is a "rural" craft.  This basket should be considered investment art.  Look over my selection of TONGA baskets in my store category AFRICAN ART  (left side this page) for a glorious compliment to any Zulu Basket.  (Zulu - Wow - what a cool name).
